THE PREVENTION PARTNERSHIP
The Prevention Partnership is an important program sponsored by The Consultation Center in which we work closely with individuals and businesses in an effort to strengthen our communities by preventing some of the most serious personal and social problems confronting us today. We believe that prevention makes sense not only because it is the right thing to do, but because it works. Why wait until a family is in crisis before providing help? Why wait until a child becomes a victim before doing something? Why wait until more women end up in the emergency room because of violence from an intimate partner? Why wait until it is too late?
Did you know that:
Nearly 20,000 children in Connecticut are victims of abuse and neglect each year;
Weekly or daily use of cigarettes by adolescents quadruples between 7th and 11th grades, and 26% of 10th graders report smoking marijuana in the past 30 days;
In a single year, over 20,000 arrests occur in Connecticut for domestic violence and, in more than half the cases, substance abuse is a major contributor to family violence.
Homelessness continues to disrupt the lives of over 4,000 individuals and families in New Haven annually.
These statistics are not just numbers; they represent the lives of real people in our communities who need our help. What can we do?
For the past 25 years, The Consultation Center has been a local and national leader in the fight to prevent such problems and to promote the positive development of children and families across the life span. Major programs offered include:
therapeutic nursery and family support programs to prevent child abuse;
positive youth development programs to prevent substance abuse and violence and to promote constructive youth involvement and leadership in the school and community;
anger management and conflict resolution skills for individuals who have committed domestic violence offenses;
workplace interventions to help employees better manage the stress of their jobs and personal lives in order to prevent substance abuse, depression, and family discord;
support programs to grandparents raising grandchildren and to families with individuals who are frail, disabled, or suffering from a serious mental illness;
supportive housing programs to assist individuals and families who are homeless.
Please lend your support to our prevention initiative and join the growing number of people who now form this vital partnership.
