Description
This
unique, 15-hour training program is designed for front-line
supervisors and managers at youth-serving organizations. The
course consists of the following five sessions:
Session 1: Understanding the Youth Development Framework
Session 2: Core Competencies for Youth Workers &
Supervisors
Session 3: Skills for Supervisors
Session 4: Working with Style Differences
Session 5: Taking Youth Development Back to the Workplace
Goals
This course aims to help managers and supervisors to:
- Gain a solid grounding in the youth development approach.
- Learn strategies for supervising youth development practice.
- Assess their leadership style.
- Sharpen their management skills.
- Increase their cultural competency.
- Network with professional peers.
Course Instructor
This course is facilitated by Terry Freeman, LCSW, CPP-R.
Terry Freeman is the Director of Adolescent Programs at The Consultation Center with more than 30 years of experience in education and social work. Her special interests include workplace issues and organizational change, prevention programming for youth, staff development, training, and work with groups.
Participant Selection
Registration is open to supervisors and managers in youth-serving agencies, including public and private organizations, neighborhoods, community centers, or residential programs. The course is designed to benefit front-line supervisors and managers who currently supervise staff. Participants will be selected from the initial registration list based upon the location and type of agency, as well as interest and participation by staff in the related course for youth workers, Advancing Youth Development.

Cost

Directions
Classes are held at the UConn Cooperative Extension System, located at 305 Skiff Street (on the corner of Whitney Ave.) in North Haven, CT.
Wilbur Cross Pkwy, South: Exit 61. Right at end of ramp onto Whitney Ave. Follow to traffic light at Skiff St. Left on Skiff St. – Center is on your right.
Wilbur Cross Pkwy, North: Exit 61. Left at end of ramp onto Whitney Ave. Continue as indicated above.
1-91 North: Take Exit 5. At end of ramp, continue straight on State St. Travel approximately 4 miles to traffic light just past Montessi Motors. Left at light onto Skiff St. Follow Skiff approximately 2 miles through 2 traffic lights (Hartford Turnpike and Ridge Rd.). The Center will be on your left just before the third light (Whitney Ave.).
1-91 South: Take Exit 10 onto Rte. 10 connector. At end of connector, left onto Whitney Ave. Travel approximately 2 miles on Whitney to traffic light at Skiff St. Left onto Skiff; Center is on your right.
